Exercise can be painful, but a meal at the end can make it more palatable. If that proves to be the incentive, here are six hiking trails in Singapore for eating well.

Since the country was imagined as a garden city, urban planners have integrated paths and greenways into the environment. The push has only picked up in recent years, and authorities have set a target of 360 kilometers of organized trails and 500 kilometers of park connectors by 2030.

Most of the trails below can be traveled on foot or by bicycle. They also pass by many food centers and bathrooms. The next time you put on your walking shoes, think about these six trails that will reward you in the end.

Coastal Park Connector at Changi Village

Distance: 15 kilometers
Difficulty: easy
Suitable for: hiking or biking
Estimated time: 3h on foot or 1h30 by bike

The Coastal Park Connector is a road that runs alongside the country’s airport and the east coast. It is also connected to other park connectors, but starts at the Tanah Merah MRT station for easy access. From there it’s a short jaunt to the Bedok Park Connector before veering east towards Changi Airport.

The trail takes you along Changi Coast Road, where you can watch planes take off and land amid lush greenery and an ocean breeze. Changi Jurassic Mile is also part of this path, where you can see over 20 life-size dinosaur exhibits. The path ends at Changi Beach Park, one of Singapore’s oldest coastal parks and the starting point for Pulau Ubin.

For food, head to Changi Village. The venerable Changi Village Food Center is well known for its nasi lemak, satay, hor fun, goreng pisang and more. Chock Full of Beans Café offers intricate latte art, while A Spoonful of Sugar makes ice cream. Little Island Brewing Company has a large outdoor area where you can drink home-brewed craft beer. MacRitchie Reservoir to Upper Thomson Loop

Distance: 11 kilometers
Difficulty: moderate
Suitable for: hiking
Estimated time: 4 hours

MacRitchie Reservoir, part of the Central Basin Nature Reserve, is Singapore’s oldest reservoir. There are a few entrances, but we recommend starting from Windsor Nature Park, an adjacent green space that connects MacRitchie.

From there, follow the yellow path towards the Treetop Walk (currently closed for renovations). You’ll pass streams, old stone bridges, and the Jelutong Tower, which you can climb for a treetop view of the surrounding area. The trail then winds around the Singapore Island Country Club golf course before plunging back into the foliage of the Lornie Trail. You can also take the promenade that runs along the edge of the reservoir. Stay on the yellow trail to end where you started and start from Windsor.

There are many dining options near the Upper Thomson MRT station. Thomson Plaza is one, which has a food court known for its laksa and popiah. Japanese restaurants like Hajime Tonkatsu & Ramen and Tsukada Nojo’s Collagen Fondue are also popular.

Further down the mall is the Roti Prata house, famous for its crispy version of the dish. Meng’s Kitchen draws crowds with its bak chor mee, and Nam Kee has served chicken rice in the area since the 1960s. Columbus Coffee offers cold beers and waffles, while Shawn’s Beer Nest serves craft beer from his taps.

East Coast Park in Katong

Distance: 10 kilometers
Difficulty: easy
Suitable for: hiking or biking
Estimated time: 2 hours

East Coast Park runs parallel to Singapore’s southeastern coastline with views of freighters in the bay and Indonesia in the distance. It is especially crowded on weekends with families flocking to the beaches.

There are many ways to access the trail, but an easy option is the Stadium MRT station. From there, head west on the Geylang Park Connector towards Tanjong Rhu Promenade, loop around Passion Wave @ Marina Bay, and you are in East Coast Park proper. It’s an easy, leisurely walk (weekdays) through tall swaying trees before meeting more people along the beaches.

Likewise, there are many exits outside of East Coast Park, but we recommend reaching Siglap Park Connector before turning left onto East Coast Road. Dining options abound here. For local cuisine, there are the brackish shrimp noodles from Beach Road Prawn Noodle House, the herbal bak kut teh from Sin Heng, the zi char from Sin Hoi Sai or the popular 328 Katong Laksa.

Forty Hands, Homeground or C Cafe offer a dose of caffeine, while Petit Pain offers quality croissants if you’re willing to wait. Dine on European-inspired dishes from Picotin and Casa Nostra, then enjoy premium ice cream from Birds of Paradise. Central Rail Corridor at Upper Bukit Timah Road

Distance: 6 kilometers
Difficulty: easy

The central rail corridor is part of the rail corridor that runs from Tanjong Pagar to Woodlands. For this part, start at King Albert Park Station, walk a short distance along Dunearn Road and to the old Bukit Timah Station. Cross the Bukit Timah Road truss bridge and head north towards Woodlands.

The mostly dirt road runs parallel to Bukit Timah and is lined with greenery on both sides. There isn’t much shade so bring a hat. The trail ends at the upper deck of Bukit Timah Truss, and a staircase next to it takes you to the popular Rail Mall. However, we recommend that you continue on Upper Bukit Timah Road to the Cashew MRT station.

Just passing Cashew is Ga Hock Eating House. Most diners come here during dinner for Ga Hock Seafood, a zi char place with an old school vibe and a large outdoor seating area. The restaurant is known for its fish head curry, salted crab, but other dishes like har cheong kai, long qing vegetables, and pea shoots are excellent. There’s also Carol Satay and Otah, who make a killer peanut sauce.

A little north of Ga Hock is Karu’s Banana Leaf Indian restaurant. True to their habit, they serve their rice over banana leaves, and the briyani is accompanied by free-flowing rice, appalam, curry, and vegetables. Garlic naan is also incredibly fragrant.

Southern rail corridor to Alexandra Village

Distance: 9 kilometers
Difficulty: easy
Suitable for: hiking or biking
Estimated time: 2 hours
Bathrooms / water points: no

We start again at King Albert Park Station, but this time we head south towards Tanjong Pagar. Compared to the Central Rail Corridor, the trail here is gentler on the legs thanks to the multi-layered flooring, but longer. Along the way, you can admire the street art painted under the bridges, the glittering facades of the Science Park, and the colonial houses along Portsdown Road.

The trail currently ends at Alexandra (the last stretch to Tanjong Pagar is not yet ready) and you will exit at Jalan Kilang Barat, a side road from Jalan Bukit Merah Road. The Alexandra Village Food Center is a short walk away. The place is popular for its avocado shakes, as well as its stalls selling terracotta rice, bak kut teh, xiao long bao, gourmet burgers, and chicken with soy sauce.

Coast to Coast Trail to Punggol

Distance: 36 kilometers
Difficulty: easy
Suitable for: hiking
Estimated time: 8 to 10 hours on foot or 4 hours by bike
Bathrooms / water points: yes

The Coast-to-Coast Trail is currently Singapore’s longest walking and cycling trail. It starts in Jurong then winds through various neighborhoods and monuments before ending in Punggol. Due to the length, it is advisable to start early if you intend to do the entire route.

Start your trip at Jurong Lake Garden, which has a winding boardwalk that runs along the water. The Quarry Pool at Bukit Batok Nature Reserve provides a great photo opportunity, while the Botanical Gardens allow you to explore a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Try to spot otters at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, then bird watch at Sengkang Floating Wetland. Take a look at Malaysia from the Kelong Bridge in Punggol before ending at Coney Island.

Near the end is the settlement of Punggol, which is home to many restaurants overlooking the Straits of Johor. Treat yourself to white bee hoon from White Restaurant, western dishes from Fusion or fresh crabs from House of Seafood. There’s also Indian fare from the Tandoor Lounge, Japanese beers and bites from Iazakaya 95, and mookata from Siam Square.
