“The finest fleet of islands anchored in any ocean,” said novelist Mark Twain of his 19th-century excursion to the Hawaiian archipelago. Long the tropical target of many travelers’ desire, America’s distant 50th state is a bucket list item worthy of a trans-Pacific flight: giant waterfalls, screensaver-worthy beaches, pounding sapphire surf, active volcanoes and a flood of jurassic park greenery are just some of the wonders that await you there. From hiking to surfing, helicopter rides to lazing on the beach, Aloha State has no shortage of thrills and relaxation. And if you pack your clubs, nothing beats golf in Hawaii.

For the flag hunters among us, Hawaii’s incredible topography makes it one of the best golf destinations on the planet. The state has more than 70 courses spread across five islands, with plenty of pros — from the PGA, LPGA and Champions Tour — playing for a paycheck every year.

Like a pilgrimage on the Links of Scotland, you won’t get to all the trails in one visit to Hawaii – there’s just too much to see. What you will be get, however, consistent 80-degree temperatures, immaculately manicured turf, volcanic vistas and lava-covered fairways that are surefire landing spots for the longest drives of your life.

For now, your best approach to playing golf in Hawaii is to give yourself a week and build a à la carte visit using the course guide below. You’ll want to play as many holes as possible, of course, but make sure you enjoy paradise and don’t spend your whole week driving and jumping in puddles between courses.

Our advice? Pick an island (or two), grab a handful of tee times on some of the world’s best tracks, pack your most stylish floral collared shirt, then grab it and rip it. Golfing in Hawaii is a pin seeker’s dream. By the time your ball settles after that first-tee bomb, you’ll already be thinking of a reason to come back.

Golf in Hawaii: The Best Golf Courses in the Aloha State

kauai

Where to play: The Ocean Course in Hokuala, a design by Jack Nicklaus, hosted the top male collegiate golfers last winter. His outside nine takes you through lush jungle before digging Hawaii’s longest stretch of oceanside holes, punctuated by the spectacular par-3 fourteenth (that’s your Instagram pic) and the daring but drivable par-4 sixteenth (get out the big stick and go for it – you haven’t crossed the Pacific Ocean to disarm yourself).

To Poipu Bay on the sunny South Shore of Kauai, Phil Mickelson shot a 59 at the 2004 PGA Grand Slam of golf, an event Tiger Woods has won seven times. Verdant mountains and humpback whales off the back-nine cliff coast highlight this Robert Trent Jones Jr. layout.

RTJ II also designed Princeville Makai Golf Club on Hanalei Bay in the North Shore; it is rated one of the top public tunes in the United States by golf summary. Be sure to hire a GolfBoard so you can surf its pristine fairways from shot to shot.

Where to stay and eat: Located in the 450-acre Hōkūala resort community and minutes from Lihue Airport, Timbers Kaua’i Ocean Club & Residences‘The two- to four-bedroom villas (equipped with multiple verandas) make an ideal base camp for Garden Isle golf groups. Sip a Happy Madison rum cocktail (named after the logo of Adam Sandler’s production company, which features the Ocean Course background) in a surreal, two-tiered infinity pool before dining on the delicious menu at the farm to table chef Zach Cummings at Hualani’swhich includes fresh ingredients from the resort’s 16-acre organic farm.

Off property, dinner at Hukilau Lanai to historic Kapa’a for an old-school Hawaiian-style meal. The ahi poke nachos are a must.

maui

Where to play: Your purpose to play on the east valley island Kapalua Planting Course, the jewel in Maui’s crown and home of the PGA’s Sentry of Champions Tournament every January. Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, the game’s best design duo, designed the pine-framed mountainside course, located on a former pineapple plantation, in 1992. They renovated it a few years ago for the make it more guest friendly (think extra-wide fairways). Prepare for high winds, jungle ravines, breathtaking views over the Pacific Ocean to the island of Molokai, and the chance to take the longest drive of your life on the 18th hole. more than 600 meters downhill. (Pro tip: book a front caddy to help you read the greens and provide target lines off the tee. You’ll need it).

On the west side of the island, The Royal Kā’anapali Course offers a fun day on links and a history lesson. Cultural plaques adorn each trailhead, telling the stories of Maui’s royal leaders who once lived on this sacred land. Wailea Emerald is a scenic design by Robert Trent Jones Jr. with great elevation changes and excellent course conditions. His difficult brother, Wailea Goldrequires a bit more skill and strategy if you want to post a small number.

Where to stay and eat: On the west side of the island, the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua covers 54 verdant acres and borders an ancient Hawaiian burial site. The spa is also top-notch (book the Lomilomi specialty massage). Each of the hotel’s six restaurants is delicious, but the fan favorite is the beachfront burger shackwho makes burgers, fries and some of the best handmade milkshakes.

From the hotel, walk down the coastal path to Merriman’s to taste its mahi mahi in a macadamia nut crust and its famous pineapple bread pudding. For arguably the best ahi poke bowl in Hawaii, head to by Tamuraa no-frills market with multiple locations all over the island.

Island of Hawaii (the Big Island)

Where to play: You’d be hard pressed to find a more exciting tee shot than the par-3 third at Mauna Kea, which requires a long, forced traverse from a spellbinding nook along the Kohala Coast to a peninsula green. The rest of Mauna Kea, considered one of America’s finest public courses, shines from start to finish with picture-perfect Hawaiian beauty.

In the Kona neighborhood, another par-3 worth the price of admission is the 17th hole at the virgin Four Seasons Hualalai Hotel, a Jack Nicklaus-designed course that hosts the Mitsubishi PGA Champions Tour tournament. You’ll weave your way through a maze of gleaming green fairways and crisp black lava landscapes before crescendoing to the signature sandy seaside hole where a birdie could definitely be in your future.

The 15th hole of Mauna Lani South Course will never leave your memory: it plays on a blue bay in a clover-shaped green surrounded by palm trees and sand. It is one of the most photographed holes in the world.

Where to stay and eat: After a $100 million renovation in 2021, the 865-acre waterfront Four Seasons Hualalai Hotel features the famous Jack Nicklaus Golf Course, superb sushi at Ulu Ocean Grill, a swimmable aquarium, and tours of nearby Kona coffee farms.

For some of the best poke and local dishes on the island, head to Umekes Fish Market Bar & Grillfifteen minutes from the station.

Oahu

Where to play: Located forty-five minutes north of Honolulu, Arnold Palmer of Turtle Bay is Oahu’s preeminent track. Blending Scottish features with an Eden-like landscape, it meanders through 100 acres of natural wetlands, jungle and marshland and features more than 70 bunkers dotting the rugged, evergreen-lined layout. Although the course hugs Oahu’s sparkling North Shore, the 17th hole offers one of your only views of the coast: it plays directly on the waves.

Nestled along the sunny lee east coast Koh Olina Golf Club, where the LPGA’s top players have played every year for most of the past decade. And unless you play it or fly over a plane, you may never find Royal Hawaiian Golf Cluba cruel but worthwhile design by Greg Norman set in the middle of a jurassic park-sque landscape. Pack an extra round (or two) of balls for that real bucket-lister in Windward Oahu twenty minutes from Waikiki.

Where to stay and eat: Backdrop for TV show Lost and blockbuster movie Forget Sarah Marshall, Turtle Bay ComplexThe 850 acres of Côte-Nord frontage are a dream for surfers and swimmers.

Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani is an urban oasis in the heart of Honolulu. For homemade Hawaiian dishes, the neck of smoked kalua pork and boiled butterflyfish Helena’s Hawaiian Kitchen, an Oahu landmark since 1946, has you covered. Fancy a Chef’s table live? A meal at Senia high on the list of many foodies in Hawaii.

Where to play: Some experts will tell you that Manele Golf Course at Four Seasons Resort Lanai is the best golf course in the Hawaiian Islands. It is difficult to dispute this statement. Not only is the Nicklaus-designed masterpiece a treasure, but it’s also the only 18-hole course in town. To get there, board the 1-hour Lahaina-Maui ferry for the remote, unspoilt shores owned by tech billionaire Larry Ellison. Card a deuce on the mesmerizing par-3 12th hole, flanked by 150-foot-high seaside cliffs above Hulopoe Bay, and you’ll import a lifetime of bragging rights home.

Where to stay and eat: Lagoon-style pools, a two-story observatory, koi ponds and serene gardens highlight the immaculate grounds of the Four Seasons Lanai Hotel. It also faces an aquatic sanctuary, offering guests some of the best snorkeling and dolphin and whale watching in the area.

After the round, recap your best shots over drinks and lunch (and a signature ice cream sandwich) at Views, the course restaurant. Come for dinner, book an in-house reservation Nobu Lanai and enjoy the ingenuity of sashimi and sushi by renowned chef-restaurateur Nobu Matsuhisa.

In the early 1660s, Sir Andrew sought a location in the heart of Perthshire for a manor house that reflected his family’s long history of public service and offered refuge from the blows and thrusts of Scottish politics.

So he built Murrayshall, which has been lovingly maintained by generations of owners and today ranks among Scotland’s finest golf resorts.

Register to our Business newsletter

“We have views to die for here at Murrayshall,” said managing director Gary Silcock. “The topography of the land is beautiful. Money can’t buy that. It’s our greatest asset.”

The 365-acre estate offers two parkland golf courses — with 18 and nine holes — and an expansive driving range as well as expert tuition.

The visitor to Murrayshall is struck by the quiet dignity of the estate, which reflects the sensitive way in which the historic building has been transformed into a luxurious four-star country house. The 365-acre estate offers two parkland golf courses — with 18 and nine holes — and an expansive driving range as well as expert tuition.

Built in 1664, Murrayshall House, which stands near Scone, was owned by the family of Sir Andrew Murray for 260 years.

The house was modernized in the 18th century and again in 1864. The property continued to change hands and then in 1973 a group of businessmen bought the house and decided to make the most of the extensive land .

They transformed the estate and created the luxury hotel you see today. Today – under the ownership of Stellar Asset Management – Murrayshall has two main objectives; to become a leading golfing destination and the focal point of its members’ leisure activities.

Murrayshall is in a beautiful setting

The management team are focused on upgrading Murrayshall’s “experiential journey”, at a time when the leisure sector rebounds from restrictions imposed during the pandemic.

They want to create a club where every member sees Murrayshall as more than just a place to enjoy golf; it becomes part of their way of life.

They also aim to recapture the look and feel of 1980s Murrayshall, using the same sand used on the PGA Centenary course at Gleneagles.

Mr Silcock, who previously worked at Gleneagles, La Manga Club and The Belfry, said: “Our aspiration at Murrayshall is to become one of the top 25 golf resorts in the UK.

The surrounding countryside offers many fascinating walks

“To achieve this, we plan to add a spa and increase the number of room offerings, as well as a new branding and stronger identity for restaurants and bars.”

Murrayshall’s development plans are also expected to give Perthshire’s economy a boost.

“We have a request in the planning stage to build holiday lodges on the site currently occupied by the driving range,” Mr Silcock said.

“If the plans are approved, it would create an additional 200 jobs and add £10-15m a year to our turnover over a 10 year period.”

Perthshire offers plenty of stunning views

Mr Silcock also pointed out that this development will raise millions of pounds in tax, providing support for public services.

“Our plans are aimed at maintaining the integrity of the domain,” he added.

“We also benefit from the strong labor pool in the hospitality sector around Perth.”

Hundreds of homes are being built around Perth and Scone, showing the size of the potential local market for attractions like Murrayshall.

“Murrayshall has always had an excellent reputation for fine dining and weddings, and since its acquisition by Stellar Asset Management in 2018, investment has been ramped up,” Mr Silcock said.

“Stellar offers the agility to get around quickly in a place with three million people less than an hour’s drive away. Edinburgh Airport is just 45 minutes away by car.

Today – under the ownership of Stellar Asset Management – Murrayshall has two main objectives; to become a leading golfing destination and the focal point of its members’ leisure activities.

“We hope the business will become less seasonal,” he said. “Perth is booming with a large number of house sales as it becomes a suburban base for Edinburgh and Glasgow.”

Stellar’s backing means Murrayshall can grow fast or stop and think based on changes in the economy.

“The business is well placed for the Scottish and UK market as well as international customers due to our proximity to the airport,” said Mr Silcock.

Last year Murrayshall appointed Clarke Lutton as head of golf, a further sign that the resort is raising its game.

Aberdeenshire-born and a former tourism professional, he joined Murrayshall from Gleneagles where he served as a PGA Professional from 2018. He previously held positions at Brisbane Golf Club, Australia, and Doha Golf Club, in Qatar, where he worked for 11 years.

. He brings with him a wealth of experience to Murrayshall, having played alongside some of golf’s most famous names such as Rory McIIroy and Bryson Dechambeau.

The Murrayshall team created meandering ditches and reshaped the greens to improve course conditions. Work was also carried out to improve drainage and reinforce the bunkers.

Anyone who sets foot on the course today cannot fail to be impressed by the majestic calm of Murrayshall’s setting. You may also want to venture beyond the estate and explore a host of intriguing walks in the surrounding hills, taking you to follies and memorials that reflect Perthshire’s colorful history.

Murrayshall’s restaurants have also undergone a rebrand, with Eolas Restaurant serving dinner and breakfast and Cairns offering all-day dining. Diners can enjoy sweeping views of the landscape that once fascinated Sir Andrew Murray.

Later this summer, Murrayshall will host an Order of Merit event, featuring 80 of the PGA’s top professionals, and a ProAm tournament that will showcase the revamped course.

Murrayshall has been at the heart of Perthshire public life for over three centuries. With such ambitious owners, you feel the brightest days are yet to come.

Greg Wright stayed at Murrayshall in Perthshire for two nights.

Red Sky Golf Club

A sheep farm becomes a world-class golf club

Rising from sage and aspen groves and spanning 800 acres of historic Colorado ranches, Red Sky Golf Club offers golfers majestic vistas and exceptional golf in an extraordinary alpine playground that includes two award-winning golf courses and unparalleled amenities.

A former sheep ranch, Red Sky’s design has been certified as a member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary program. The two courtyards are separated by a massive ridge, which serves as a migration corridor for deer and elk.

Great care was taken to preserve the landscape, including the transplanting or revegetation of over 25,000 native plants during the construction of the Fazio course only.

Approximately 80 acres of sod were applied to each course, reducing the amount of fertilizer required for seed growth while protecting the nearby Eagle River from silt erosion, which is common when hydroseeding.

Red Sky has won awards with its two layouts by Fazio (which opened in 2002) and Greg Norman (a year later). Private courses may be challenged by golf tourists staying at Vail Resorts and other select area hotels.

the Fazio coursewhich is par-72 and spans 7,113 yards from its back set of five tees, is considered generous from tee to green, but its massive, undulating greens will test your flat-stick prowess.

The layout – which literally seems to soar above the landscape below – presents a beautiful panorama of Vail’s back bowls, with scenes of aspens and junipers, twisting mini-groves of scrub oaks, uphill and downhill holes. , red rock outcroppings, wildflower meadows, and an upland lake, which comes into play.

the Norman course is played 7,580 yards from the tips and is a par-72, but its signature feature is the tightly mown bentgrass greens. Those smirking outlines may frustrate you, but at least once during a round you’ll hit a “horrible” shot that wraps just off the pin.

Boasting rock-strewn water bodies and deep brush-filled arroyos, the Norman course takes full advantage of the natural terrain and plays through steep outcrops, steep ravines and wildflower-festooned meadows.

the Norman course is everything a mountain course should be, with jaw-dropping views and plenty of elevation changes and strategy. It’s also not what a mountain course shouldn’t be – without crazy, staggered fairways that deliver good shots in trouble or extreme climbs and descents. Fair is the word Norman course but be aware of the length of the back tees, which will even beat you through the air.

Overall, the Norman course presents more of a challenge than the Fazio course from tee to green due to its longer length, and it is more penalizing if you miss the fairway.

the Fazio the front-nine has a desert feel, while the back is a true alpine experience with aspen-lined fairways. the Norman 18 is longer than the Fazio, and green complexes are simpler. Putting is easier because the greens are not very inclined.

The fairways of both courses are lined with more native trees and grasses than luxury homes. The entire 800-acre property has just 87 residential lots, a fact not lost on golfers who enjoy the feel of a secluded mountainside golfing experience.

Resort guests also have access to the Red Sky Golf Academy throughout the golf season, from May to September. It is directed and stars former PGA Tour pro Larry Rinker. Clinics and retreats, as well as one-hour one-on-one sessions, are available. The academy programs offer classroom and practice area tuition, including a 350-yard deep double-ended practice facility and a short game area with three specialty greens.

The only distractions at Red Sky Golf Club are the spectacular vistas of the Vail Valley. Each of the courses has been consistent on the “best lists” of resort tracks and is a joy to play. If the alpine sun and green grass make you think of golf, then the Red Sky Golf Club is a must on your next trip to this region.

Along with a new name, the Beaver Valley Golf and Recreation Society (Society) has big plans for the future.

Formerly Champion Lakes Golf and Country Club, the popular nine-hole course located just outside Fruitvale is now known as Champion Lakes Community Golf Course.

With the name change, the nonprofit hopes to expand its reach, while opening the door to more grant opportunities for much-needed upgrades.

“The Beaver Valley Golf and Recreation Society strives to support a facility that promotes outdoor recreation, appreciates our members, welcomes the public and supports our community,” said President Stephen Piccolo.

“The next three years are essential to the sustainability of the golf course.”

Champion Lakes Community Golf Course is set to implement a massive improvement plan. Photo: Jim Bailey

The golf course has partnered with BC Special Olympic-Trail Athletes to provide passes and free lessons for several years, and would like to expand their community outreach by offering golf sessions to local schools as part of their programs. physical education. Additionally, the Company is seeking to reinstate the BC Summer Games and Selkirk College Junior Camp programs, Teck’s Learn to Golf Health and Wellness program and other senior-friendly activities.

Champion also invites the public to schedule events and functions such as corporate and private weddings and social events.

“The Society identified the need to evolve into a community recreation facility where members and the public feel welcome to come and play a round of golf, enjoy a casual dinner on the patio, book a business meeting, a wedding or a weekend camping getaway. “, Piccolo said. “With the right facility upgrades, the opportunities to bring the community together for different functions multiply.”

As for the golf course, Champion’s top priority is to replace the irrigation system, which will be expensive but has been in use since the course was built 31 years ago.

“This is necessary to stay the course and create opportunities to land new features for overall revitalization,” Piccolo explained. “The irrigation system may cost over $1 million and will require the support of various grants and a long-term plan for multi-year implementation.”

Improvements to the camping area are also high on the list. Development of an outdoor barbecue area with seating and additional landscaping to accommodate events and campers has a development date set for fall 2023 and spring 2024.

The restaurant will also undergo a major overhaul to transform it into a comfortable and relaxed sports-themed dining/pub space.

“The Society will invite local sports/recreation groups to exhibit memorabilia and photography showcasing their accomplishments bringing local memories and character to the space.”

Restaurant upgrades are slated for completion this summer and fall and include cosmetic renovations, improved lighting, televisions, music system, POS system and new furnishings. The kitchen will also see a new charcoal grill, fryer, stove and dishwasher thanks to a grant received from Columbia Basin Trust (CBT).

And to make the restaurant and spacious terrace more accessible, the course will also see a new lift installed to accommodate people of all ages and abilities.

The pro shop will expand to create an office for the general manager, freeing up space in the restaurant where his current office was. The project is scheduled to begin in September 2022 with grant support from CBT, Zone A, Kootenay Savings, Teck, ATCO and the Beaver Valley Recreation Commission.

The facility’s current electrical supply is insufficient and the course will work with FortisBC to provide an electrical upgrade. The Company is working with Star Link in 2023 to have a satellite connection for wifi which will improve both the maintenance, professional shop and restaurant capacities.

With these enhancements, the goal is to improve the overall experience for members and visitors to Champion Lakes and to make the game more accessible and enjoyable for all ages.

A stylish daredevil! Jinger Vuolo (née Duggar) defied her family’s strict dress code rules by wearing a miniskirt while playing golf.

“[Golf] Was fun today,” she captioned an Instagram carousel post on Wednesday, May 4. “My second time. Can’t wait for next time @jeremy_vuolo.” The first shot featured an image of the former counting on star, 28, aligning her iron club on a golf ball and donning a coral-patterned tank top, white cap, sneakers and a short skirt just inches above her knee. A second photo of her outfit was captured in another slide of her post, while two other photos included her husband, Jeremy Vuoloenjoying their outing.

Upon noticing Jinger’s fashion selection, fans quickly swarmed the comments section to congratulate her.

“Love the cut,” wrote one Instagram user. “Jinger breaks all the rules of modesty, she looks stunning and so cute in this golf outfit!” another weighed in, adding, “I’m so happy to see that she’s become her own wife and is making winning decisions about what she wears.” A third event commenter jokingly wrote, “Would love to see your parents’ reaction” with a laughing emoji.

The reality TV alum has gone against the conservative Duggar family style on several occasions by donning different pairs of pants, like skinny jeans. She has even been called by fans a “rebellious Duggar”.

Most recently, Jinger wore a stunning all-white bow jumpsuit for Easter Sunday on April 17. Jeremy, 34, shared a photo of their holiday outfits via Instagram that day. The couple married in 2016 and share daughters Felicity and Evangeline Vuolo.

However, perhaps Jinger’s boldest moment was when she chose white dress pants to wear to her brother’s house. Jeremiah DuggarMarch 26. A photo of her at the ceremony appeared on Reddit shortly after.

Previously, the TLC alum spoke to her parents Jim Bob and Michelle Dugarthe modesty protocol of in an extract from his memoirs, The Hope We Said: Finding Peace With God’s Promiseswhich she and her husband released in May 2021.

“My mother had always dressed us girls in skirts and dresses, a standard taken from Deuteronomy 22:5, which says, ‘A woman shall not wear a man’s garment,'” she wrote in her book. “Modesty was a big topic in our home, and we thought wearing skirts instead of pants was a central part of modesty. But I wanted to find out for myself what the Bible had to say.

The Arkansas native also noted in her book that she “never found a passage specifically forbidding women to wear pants.”

“Growing up, I had a set of standards that I took for granted,” she added. “[But] my beliefs were changing.

THE Match and Handicap Chairman, who is a volunteer position, does an amazing job at Denbigh Golf Club.

Don Walmsley, a retired naval engineer, oversees more competitions than any other club in the region.

Besides being a competitor, he produces all the results in the most efficient way, organizes the knockout competitions and answers a series of rules questions that arise regularly.

There are undoubtedly a host of other unsung heroes among the City’s club and amateur sport spectrum and competitors are always, regardless of club, indebted and grateful for their hard work and help.

Arwel Wyn Jones won the second monthly medal competition of the year with a clean round of 65, one stroke ahead of Kyle Morris and Geraint Williams, first and second in the bronze division.

Turning Stone in New York makes a difference and more

No. 1 on this list is the Turning Stone Resort, located in Verona in the Oneida Indian Nation of central New York. With its trio of top-notch golf courses, everything at Turning Stone is ready for a bucket-list golf vacation that adds to its after-golf fun and amenities.

The three courses are varied in their design in their characteristics and their challenges while being maintained to the umpteenth degree. It’s this overall variety – and the varying degree of difficulty of the courses – that makes Turning Stone a step above the competition.

Atunyotedesigned by Tom Fazio, Kaluhyat (a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. routing), and Shenendoahshaped by Rick Smith, have been awarded over the years for their quality and playability.

Designed by Fazio Atunyote has wide fairways, white sand bunkers and absolutely flawless conditioning, as you would expect on a course that hosts PGA Tour events. It is located approximately five miles from the main Turning Stone property on relatively open and mostly flat terrain, and Fazio has placed numerous bodies of water and stands of trees and hazards to more than demand attention. of the golfer.

Kaluhyat is the player’s course here, and is Turning Stone’s most demanding track. Jones plotted his course around and over half a dozen lakes, through swamps and up to 50 feet of elevation, which adds both difficulty and aesthetics. With its forced reach, length (7,105 yards, the longest of the resort’s three courses) and rating and slope (75.5, 150), it’s up to the golfer to focus and stay fully engaged on every blow to Kaluhyat.

Shenendoah, Smith’s creation, is the less publicized course of the property, but it is perhaps the most fun. The track runs through a series of wetlands, which – combined with holes carved through stands of trees and some that almost look like links in their wide vistas – allow this course to be a bit of everything, and everything is good. Shenendoah was the first of three 18-hole courses laid out at the Turning Stone Resort and a renovation in 2016 made it even better. I challenge you not to have a good time and good game on this course.

Turning Stone Resort is complete with world-class accommodations in one of seven lodges, hotels and inns, an expansive casino with table games, slots, bingo and poker room, and seemingly limitless dining options.
