Closure of Sand Harbor boat launch will increase activity at Cave Rock

Nevada park officials expect the Cave Rock boat launch to be very popular with boaters this summer with the ramp closing at Sand Harbor due to low water levels.

“Park staff expect the Cave Rock boat launch to be extremely busy this season,” officials said Thursday.

The Cave Rock boat launch is currently open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week, for motorized boat launches. Starting May 27, ramp times will increase from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

No boat will be launched if a parking space is not available.

Beginning at 6 a.m. on May 27, the Sand Harbor boat launch parking lot will be open to provide limited parking for vehicles with kayaks and paddleboards, as well as parking for oversized vehicles.

Boaters are reminded to complete the inspection of all watercraft with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency before arriving at the boat launch. For more information on the invasive species program and inspection locations, visit tahoeboatinspections.com.

Nevada State Parks urges visitors to enjoy a safe boating season by observing boating safety practices. Always wear a lifejacket, don’t mix alcohol and sailing, check the weather forecast before setting off and file a flotation plan.

When swimming, be aware that high altitudes can tire you out more quickly, remember cold water will take your breath away and be sure to enter the water slowly to give your body time to acclimate at cold temperatures.
