PG&E warns of increase in scams in San Mateo

SAN MATEO, CA – More than 40 attempted scams in San Mateo have been reported to PG&E of people posing as utility workers in the past three months, according to the utility provider.

PG&E said in a press release that it believed that number was just the “tip of the iceberg” due to the number of unreported scams. The crooks try to trick people into giving them personal information.

Overall, the number of scam attempts reported to PG&E increased 65% in September and October compared to the previous two months.

PG&E has warned that scammers often step up their fraud attempts during the holiday season, taking advantage of consumers’ increased online presence.

PG&E noted the following signs of a potential scam:

  • Threat of disconnection: Scammers can aggressively demand immediate payment of a suspected overdue bill.
  • Immediate payment request: The crooks can ask the customer to buy a prepaid card and then supposedly call them back to make the payment of an invoice.
  • Prepaid card request: When the customer calls back, the caller asks the customer for the prepaid card number, which gives the scammer instant access to the funds on the card.
  • Money back or discount offers: Scammers may say that your utility company has overcharged you and owes you a refund, or that you are entitled to a refund.
