Powys golf trio raise £3,000 for cancer research

Three women from Powys have raised £3,000 for cancer research by taking part in a grueling 24-hour golf challenge.

Maggie Cadwallader of Welshpool, Chris Thomas of Llanymynech and Jo Lawson of Lakeside played 54 holes to reach the finish line.

The three women played on three different courses at Welshpool, Llanymynech and Lakeside on June 16 and 17, the hottest day of 2022 so far.

Starting in Llanymynch at 3pm on Thursday, they traveled to Lakeside to play the Front 9 before braving the Welshpool Hills on Saturday and then returning to Lakeside for the Back 9, rounding all three courses in the allotted time.

All three golf clubs donated cash and prizes for the raffle and “Guess the total number of strokes” contest.

In total, the three golfers have raised £3,000 for Breast Cancer Now, a charity which provides care for those affected by breast cancer and funds research for a cure.

All three women are breast cancer survivors, which makes the cause extremely close to their hearts.

During the presentation, local organizer Linda Sagar said, “I want to thank golfers, clubs, donors and all volunteers for a great effort and wonderful donation to advance breast cancer research. We need these funds and we are very grateful for them.

The trio averaged just seven on their handicaps on each of the three hilly courses under the scorching sun.

While the challenge is over, people can still donate to the cause at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/24hourgolfchallenge
